After being put on hold for COVID-19, student modular building project moves forward with Collaborative Studio

Mississippi State building construction science and architecture students have been working to finish construction on two modular buildings as part of a project for the Fall Collaborative Studio.

Building construction science students began the early design and construction process on the buildings during their first year of study in the program last academic year, but the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them from completing the build in the spring.

Student Honored with ACSA Award for “The Sky House”

Carlos Soto ’20

Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design alumnus Carlos Soto ’20 recently received an award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) 2020 Housing Competition for his project, “The Sky House,” an endeavor undertaken for a studio project during his last semester as a student. Soto’s work was recognized with an Honorable Mention from the prestigious competition.

College Textbook & Course Material Costs: AAP Releases Preview Version of Student Monitor’s Fall 2020 Report

Average student spending on college textbooks and course materials continued to decline during the fall semester of 2020, dropping 7% compared to the same term last year, according to a special preview of the latest data from independent research firm Student Monitor.  A high-level version of Student Monitor’s Fall 2020 report is due out in November, followed by the full report in December.

Mississippi State Building Construction Science student wins national scholarship

A Mississippi State Building Construction Science student was awarded the contractor scholarship from the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies.

Philip Christian headshotPhillip Christian, a Dorsey native, received the first NASCLA 2020 Contractor Scholarship for $2,500.

Christian, who is in his junior year at Mississippi State, said that he believes his grades are what won him this scholarship.

Christian went on to say that his father inspired him to pursue a career in construction.

“When I was a kid, he had a business remodeling houses, so I spent many summer days helping him,”
